Thanks for the suggestions.

Loading Google Maps in a Private window still makes it peg the CPU
after a second or two.

Yes, I have uBlock Origin, but also NoScript, Auto Tab Discard, and Cookie Bro.
Disabling NoScript and uBlock Origin and then re-enabling them seems
to have cleared the issue with Google Maps.

For the other site, this has no effect: it still partially loads, and
Invoking the Web Developer Tools from Firefox causes an empty panel
(so it can't load fully, because the Javascript engine is caput).

So the two sites share symptoms, but the underlying cause is
different, though they are within the Javascript engine.

Will keep looking ...
