I think this is both correct, but also almost wrong in the sense that it
feels too dismissive.

Microsoft had a FOMO when this new internet thing came along and they
didn't have a TCP/IP stack nor a browser.

They were entirely rational and correct to have a FOMO in that instance.

Google had a FOMO when they dabbled in mobile, then saw the first iPhone
with touch screen, etc. and ditched their work on Android and began
working on a touch screen version.

They were entirely rational and correct to have a FOMO in that instance.

Blackberry / RIM did *not* have a FOMO when iPhones hit the market. I
imagine they regretted that, but they didn't survive it, so can't ask them.

TL;DR - the large players in the tech market are having a FOMO, and it's
a rational response, because this can be a game-changer.

i.e. MS bundles access to this in Windows, Edge browser, etc. People
begin using it (they already have begun using just the ChatGPT as a
search engine, and it is not and was not designed to be a search engine,
that is just an emergent property).

People quickly grow accustomed to having their search results summarized
for them so in many cases they have no need to click through to the
foot-noted sites where the results came from.

Those sites that are ad supported suddenly see a reduction in traffic.

Google's ad services are on those sites. Google sees a significant drop
in revenue.

See: Google News and the various news organizations being unhappy with
the snippets presented right in Google's page, without click-throughs.

This can (and, IMHO, is likely to) upset the internet landscape on a
scale similar to mobile devices.

So, yeah, FOMO. But, not because this is just a trend like 3D TVs.

My 2¢.
