Medical technology is highly regulated. This kind of problem *ought* to be prevented by the regulatory system. Your body should not stop working (you shouldn't go blind, you shouldn't die) if the sole startup that holds the IP for your body parts shuts down their servers. Medical implants should be multiply sourced; their principle of operation should be a publically accessible industry standard (not a trade secret) that can be replicated by multiple companies.
