It is the latter that I am curious about.
If the image that is flashed on the SD card boots up an installer that
checks which model it is on, and then installs binary blobs ...etc. then my
intended scenario will not work (do the install on the older Pi, copy
things from the newer one, then move the card to the new Pi).

Bummer ...
