Many, if not all, Linux compatible VPN's were using OpenVPN.  It was
perfectly fine to disregard their apps entirely and load up the Open vpn
config file right in network manager... (You could probably do the same
thing in Windows with the Openvpn community gui.. although, it was never
terribly friendly.)

But now that I've had a chance to play with Wireguard,, I never never
look back.. Find a vpn provider that has a Wireguard option, and you
should be all set.  Especially for Windows Clients, the WG windows
software is miles ahead of any vpn software I've ever used for Windows.
