[kwlug-disc] KWLUG Planet

On the one hand ...

I am minded of the ~"do one thing, only, and do it very, very, well" axiom.

www.kwlug.org has demonstrated that it is not going to be the blogging
site. Never mind that things like twitter(1,2) have come along over the
years, and the community isn't going to keep www.kwlug.org 'up with the
times'. (Which is not to say that, e.g., Bob hasn't tried / hasn't been
successful in the idea, merely that in the end the real point of
presence of those efforts is not www.kwlug.org itself.)

(1) twitter, identi.ca, federation, and all 'such'.
(2) 'twitter' here representing social networking, mobile, and any and
all niftiness that now make sites popular and 'trend'y. That 'target' is
a constantly moving beastie, and www.kwlug.org isn't.

So, it is arguable that www.kwlug.org should ONLY be about kwlug (and
-its- meetings.)

[Understandably, Paul is also vested in not losing or hiding historical
'non-core' content.]

On the other hand ...

The idea of a KWLUG Planet seems juicy.

But perhaps instead of thinking of it as part of www.kwlug.org, it
should be thought of as -hosted- at www.kwlug.org. And perhaps instead
of being a KWLUG Planet, it should be a KW[F][U|UG] Planet. (F = Floss.)

Treating core as core may simplify the site, drupal wise, perhaps
simplifying the taxonomy, the complexity of which I suspect complicates
Paul's and Andrew's lives, and hampers migration.

KWLUG Planet, and other non-core (e.g. old Blogs?), could be themed
differently or otherwise separated out. Arguably it could or should
reside elsewhere, and be linked to.

Andrew's link of
http://andrewsullivancant.ca/wiki/waterloo_free_software_portal/ was
cool to wander around in. Feels like above or below any 'KWLUG Planet'
content should be a 'Other area Asteroids we're aware of', and links
like Andrew's, and Marius' below, included there.
