I thought cell was still analog? No?

I thought this was the big hullabaloo about digital (encrypting?) 
phones, and why anyone with an appropriate scanner could listen to your 
conversation.

Am I just muddling stuff together incorrectly? (So much technology in so 
many areas going by, moving targets ...)
