My experience with Debian on a laptop is just do the install while
plugged into a network cable and the install the appropriate firmware
bits from non-free post install. I pretty much only ever do a minimal
install and then select the desktop package I want later (currently
using KDE). For newer chipsets (<6 months, up to 12 months) you may
need to install testing or Sid if the default install kernel (e.g. the
relatively ancient 3.2 on Wheezy) won't detect enough of your hardware
to do an install. Newer kernels are available in stable from official
backport channels (wheezy-backports) if y
