I've always wondered about such.

Multiple drives now multiplexed over a single sata - max. = sata max.

multiple drives connected individual - each drive max. = sata max.

Is not the only reason to use one is when your case drive space is maxed 
out?

For that matter, in RAID arrays, don't you have to have it connecting to 
a PCI/e card - the array is capable of more throughput than any one sata 
connection can handle?
