I realize that you already made your decision, but no, PoE was not the
deciding factor. We needed some routers that could serve as OpenVPN
endpoints, and the Mikrotik routers came highly recommended, were
cheap, are pretty powerful/configurable, and are easy to deploy.

My experiences with OpenWRT have been very hit and miss. I often find
myself really frustrated when trying to deploy an OpenWRT router.
Between chipset incompatibility and random hardware changes between
versions, it can be a real headache.
