[kwlug-disc] need a new router -- which one?

Any chance you just changed (PDA) devices?

New Android phones turned out to do what you describe on a current
router. Chipset incompatibility. DEEPLY annoying. Also turned out a
Cisco router that replaced it was buggy (for many, it turned out), also
deeply annoying, to all sleuth out.

Given that experience, one insight that occurred to us is: First, how
many devices and what are their capabilities (e.g. multi-band,
multi-path (?)) - let that drive your specs.

e.g. Turned out my new (now rather old) shiny laptop 802.11n only does n
on 2.4GHz not 5GHz, so expensive shiny new dual-band router some years
back has been mostly wasted. <sigh>

Bear in mind, for most routers to get the max. speed you have to also
buy their companion usb dongles / cards / whatever, so be careful to
cost any such in when you consider how much you'll have to spend.

Your PDA may determine which band / how many channels, and how many
devices may determine how many pair bands you want. e.g. 3 external
antennas needed, or does one do, or ???

kijiji may be your friend here. And Inssider. (I forget the Linux
equivalent.)

In my brother's case, some of his interference problems were solved by
turning off 2.4GHZ (in favour of 5GHz only), and by buying a DECT 6.0
cordless phone.
