OpenID is still well-supported on WordPress and GNUsocial/StatusNet.
But mostly it's been supplanted by OAuth.

Part of the trouble is that all the service provider were OpenID
providers, but almost none were OpenID consumers. And I think that is
a deliberate part of their Roach Motel strategy.

But be prepared for more disruption. OAuth is supposed to be replaced
with OAuth 2.0, and there's no backwards compatibility.  But OAuth 2.0
is dependent on SSL, so Heartbleed.
