[kwlug-disc] OT: Crimping tool and RJ45 connectors?

I don't think this is all that OT...

What the fellow said, don't buy a low cost tool. I've used the ones
from The Source (Radio Shack), and the plastic ones flex so much that
you can't apply sufficient pressure for the contact points to penetrate
the wire insulation, and that was for RJ11 (phone) connectors; RJ45s
take even more pressure. I used a much nicer crimper at The Working
Centre, and bought one of these myself:
http://www.primespec.com/products/tools-and-installation-hardware/network-tools/ez-pro-hd-crimp-tool
(about $75 from PrimeSpec, who keep losing business because they don't
publish their prices online, and so can charge you more if you look rich)

The EZ connectors allow the wires to protrude through the front of the
connector, so that you can doublecheck that the wires are in the correct
order before you crimp. The connectors are a bit more expensive, but if
you're only making a few ends a year it'll save you from wasting a few
with swapped wires or wires too short. A jar of 100 connectors costs
about $50 from PrimeSpec. Oh, and buy a bag of boots too - it makes the
cables look nicer and protects those expensive connectors.
