Not a novel interpretation at all.  The GPL imposes restrictions on 
copying (ie. redistribution,), but no restrictions on usage.  Non 
free-software changes are perfectly ok so long as they stay entirely in 
house.  It's been known for a while that the current model of GPL would 
need to change with the recent popularity of Cloud services.  (I lost 
track in all the Patent discussion if there have been any changes in 
this area with GPL 3)
