[kwlug-disc] RIM VP on apps and open source

I recently had the opportunity to play with a PlayBook, and I was very
impressed. After reading all the bad press, I was expecting a pretty dry
and dismal experience. But besides native contacts/calendar stuff, I haven't
found a serious lack in functionality yet. Except maybe Netflix.
I'm only starting to explore it.
I *really* like the navigation system. Using the border around the screen
for navigation is something I haven't seen before, and I found it easier to
use than the iPad's button clicking.
The browser is fairly fast and responsive too. And the keyboard is pretty
good for a smaller device like that. I had no problems using it. I could
write email just fine with it.
After actually trying the PlayBook, I started looking at the media hammering
on RIM as a bunch of vultures looking for a story. Maybe there were issues
10 months ago, but they've come a long way, and that story is old news.
Should be interesting to try version 2.0 when it comes out.
Netflix sort of painted themselves into a corner with their Silverlight
movie app, I think... maybe that's why they are so slow to spread to new
platforms? A smart move would be for RIM to offer to port the app for them
for free, but maybe they have offered already and it didn't work out. I'm
not privy to their negotiations.
I like the idea of RIM focusing on the "doers" instead of just the "viewers".
That's a brilliant idea. But don't forget there are a lot of viewers in
the world, and the PlayBook is perfectly capable of serving them, if given
the right software.
