[kwlug-disc] Undetected resolutions?

I cant go any higher than 1024x768 even though my monitor supports 1920x1080.
I configured it by hand using xrandr, and cvt. as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution Undetected Resolution Section.
When I do this the display increases size but there is only still a small window 1024x768 that I can work in, and I cant see outside this window??
