PGP, Tor, Unix itself, email, TCP/IP.

The Facebook clones are not a matter of innovation... it's the closed
nature of the system biting people in the backside, until a large enough
minority start saying "Get me out of here!"

People are often quite happy with closed source shackles until they
run out of chain.
