FYI: Approx 15 years ago, when working in the big smoke a few days at 
a time, I stayed at a backpacker's hotel at King & Spadina.
(It is (was?) the old Spadina Hotel.) Rates were in the low $20 at 
that time. IIRC it is still there.
As the place is set up for travellers (backpackers) bring your 
passport and your own toiletries. (It is not a Holiday Inn.)
