Don't they already offer for-fee (note: no "r") consulting to businesses either directly or from recommended affiliates which are probably owned by Canonical?

That's a dot-com business model. If they can get market share it should be easy to turn a profit. The hard part will be finding a way that doesn't alienate their installed base.
