Good guess, but I don't think this is the case. Here is why ...

It does not always start from when it is cold. The one time it started
and ran for a few minutes was when I took it upstairs, then found
that the disk is being read (something it did not do since the problem
started) and took it downstairs again and it ran for a little while before
hanging again.
