  it gives you the *option* of inserting additional DVDs, but it
doesn't *demand* them.   and, as i seem to have established, if you
don't insert those other DVDs, things are going to go painfully slowly
later, but you will be allowed to proceed.

  not long, so i do.

  512M.  so it can't possibly be storing the packages.  so what's it
storing that allows subsequent package configuration to proceed that
much more quickly?
