I am happy with a Dlink DNS323 (http://www.dlink.ca/products/?pid=509)
(http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowSearchList) .  It is
linux based. Drives are ext2 formatted.  There is 3rd party software
that you can install on it. See the DNS323Wiki here:
http://wiki.dns323.info/.  If you get one, make sure you have the latest
firmware before you put anything on it.
