[kwlug-disc] why would thunderbird suddenly switch off SSL authentication?

just had someone trying to use thunderbird complain about, well,
this:

http://kb.siteground.com/article/How_to_change_max_number_of_IMAP_connections_in_Thunderbird.html

for which the solution is listed right there, so i did exactly that,
which didn't solve the problem. hmmmmmm .... how curious. a little
more perusing and, just by chance, i noticed that, down there in the
menus, the authentication of "SSL" had been switched to "Never" for
that account. there's no way that could work, so i just switched it
back to SSL and, voila, TB is up and reading mail again.

so what would cause the TB email *client* to change that setting,
since i didn't do anything on that machine or with that account.
that account used to work fine for the longest time. and i did
upgrade some of the email software on the server, but what could
possibly have caused any of that to propagate back to that particular
account on the client side? just curious. absolutely no one else
using TB on the same server had that happen to them.
