RRDtool

rrdtool-3dlogo.png

RRDtool is a much used database tool for storing performance data. It backends many monitoring systems such as Nagios, Zenoss, Monit, Cacti, and Muni. If you are a sysadmin you have probably used RRDtool.

Tobi Oetiker is the main developer behind RRDtool, as well as MRTG and SmokePing. He has a paypal wishlist and donation page located here http://tobi.oetiker.ch/wish/.

OpenStreetMap Redux

osm_logo.png

Stephen Palmateer on the KWLUG mailing list suggested that we nominate OpenStreetMap for the FLOSS Fund. In addition to its usual crusade to generate openly-licenced map data for the entire world, the project played a role in helping relief efforts after the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

The project accepts donations via http://donate.openstreetmap.org/

Linux Mint for the FLOSS Fund

mintlogo.JPG

Linux Mint is an Ubuntu derivative but instead of just repackaging Ubuntu with a different art work, they improve on Ubuntu while being compatible. e.g. if you search for help on a problem the response that applies to Ubuntu also applies to Mint

The whole OS feels cleaner, the packaging of the media codecs is not encumbered by US laws and I just like the menu.

In my humble opinion they have already solved many of the paper cuts that Ubuntu is trying to solve.

OpenLayers is a BSD licensed application JavaScript for displaying interactive "slippy maps". It can load wide variety of common geographic data formats, and has common map controls available of out of the box. But being open source you can add any additional functionality which you might require.

Project Gutenberg

(From Chris Frey)

I'd like to nominate Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org)
as a FLOSS fund recipient.

Project Gutenberg is the first and largest single collection of free
electronic books. It contains over 2 million free eBooks in its catalog,
in various formats, and has served over 100 million downloads.

I've been watching this guy's blog for a while and have come to realize that he is doing a whole lot for the open source software and particularly Linux. His work directly involves Gentoo, but many of his fixes make their way up stream.

Memtest86+

Memtest86 is a tool for testing system RAM. It runs a number of increasingly-subtle tests to determine whether your RAM has errors. It is an oft-overlooked tool that has helped me diagnose hardware issues many times over.

Memtest86+ is a fork of the code which added support for larger memory sizes and newer processors. Unlike the original version I was able to find a donations page for the forked version, so that is my nominee.

CIPPIC

The Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) was established at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law in the fall of 2003. It is the first legal clinic of its kind in Canada. In 2007, technology innovator and entrepreneur Dr. Robert Glushko and his wife, Professor Pamela Samuelson, made a large donation to CIPPIC, allowing the clinic to continue its student-centered research and advocacy on technology-related policy and law reform.

Mapnik

What is mapnik?

Mapnik is a Free Toolkit for developing mapping applications. It's written in C++ and there are Python bindings to facilitate fast-paced agile development. It can comfortably be used for both desktop and web development, which was something I wanted from the beginning.
